The “Poligono” is the highest populated neighborhood within the city of Toledo. Two thirds of the city inhabitants live in this area. The site, a very degraded and unpleasant public space, lies exactly in the core of the neighborhood. The considerable difference in height along the whole perimeter results in an infinite amount of staircases and levels reducing and fragmenting the usable areas and therefore making it impossible to read as one big public space. A fully restructure process was needed in order to enhance the character of the public domain. We aimed to transform it into the new boulevard of Toledo. To achieve this we proposed a new pavement, a continuous carpet that unifies and gives identity to the area. All kind of activities can take place there: bars, restaurants, shops, all of them have now their own space. In order to reinforce even more the public character of it, we added some new functions such as an amphitheater, fountains, playgrounds, and sport areas. Now that it is finished, we are very proud to see how intensively it is being used. It became a beating heart for the neighborhood, a new icon for the city.
